Card Rarities: What They Look Like
Yu-Gi-Oh! cards come in a wide variety of rarities, denoted by the looks of a card. Some rarities have holofoil pictures, or silver/gold letters.
There are 8 rarities that every duelist should be aware about. You will also get to see and read what a card of each rarity will look like. Rarities are listed here from lowest rare to highest.

The Ultra Rare is the lowest rarity that have both the holofoil image and non-black letter color. For Ultra Rares, the color of the letters in the name are gold with a holofoil image.
All Cover cards until Judgment of the Light come Ultra Rare and Ultimate Rare in the box set of which they are released, as well as Ghost Rare. |
The Ultimate Rare card is the first rarity to have a "embossed" foil card image. An "embossed" foil is when there are "waves" or "circles" that appear on the image of the card, giving it a natural shine to the image. The Level/Rank Stars as well as the attribute symbol and card border is also "embossed" foil.
Cards of the Ultimate Rarity are usually more expensive than their Ultra Rare counter parts, partially due to the fact there are less of them in the box. The other aspect is simply the look appeal of Ultimate Rare. |
The highest rarity of a non-Cover Card is the Secret Rare (when it comes to Booster Boxes. Later we will discuss the Gold Ultra Rares and Gold Ghost Rare). This is the most decorated color scheme available in Yu-Gi-Oh! for non-Cover Cards. Boasting silver letters and parallel holofoil, the Secret Rare is a highly decorated (and due to its extreme rarity, often highly expensive) card in your deck.

Gold Rare cards are available only in the Gold Series Packs. They are easily recognized by their Gold Card Border (versus the black border of every other card), Gold Embossed Foil Level/Rank Stars (Ultimate Rare Embossed Foil with Gold tint), and a gold tint on the card image. There are no cards that come only in the Gold Rare rarity; also, not all Gold Series cards come as Gold Rare. In a given Gold Series pack (pre-Haunted Mine)of 25 cards, 3 of them will be Gold Rare.

The Ghost Gold Rare, introduced in Gold Series 5: Haunted Mine, is the "higher" Gold Rare rarity. It is designed exactly the same as a traditional Gold Rare card, but instead of having a gold tint in the image they have the 3D holographic image from Ghost Rare. There are currently only 6 Ghost Gold Rares. In a given Haunted Mine pack of 25 cards, you will pull 1 Ghost Gold Rare and 2 Gold Rare cards, maintaining the 3:22 ratio found in the first 4 Gold Series.

The Gold Secret Rare, introduced in Premium Gold, combines the border, star, and letter format of the Gold Ultra Rare with the parallel holofoil of the Secret Rare. Premium Gold is the only set that has the Gold Secret Rare and have 32 different cards of that rarity. Premium Gold boxes each contain 3 mini-packs for a total of 15 cards: 6 Gold Secret Rare and 9 Gold Rare. Each mini-packs contains 5 cards: 2 Gold Secret cards and 3 Gold Rare cards.
