Yu-Gi-Oh! is a game of a thousand decks, where your imagination is your key to having a good time playing the game...is what I would say if this game was as simple and easy as turning on your TV and watching the show. Because this game is a game of a thousand decks, it's very important that we approach this process with caution as it is very easy to rush into the game without actually having a good idea of what to do.
Before you could even decide what you'll need and where to get it, there are a few questions you will need to ask yourself.
"How competitive do I want to be in Yu-Gi-Oh!?"
This will save you a lot of time, money and energy if you know ahead of time how active you wish to be in the Yu-Gi-Oh! competitive level. If you are looking to be crowned King of Games, that is going to take a completely different approach (both in strategy and investment) than if you just wanna throw down with some friends or some people at your local game/card shop. This site, in general, is to help those who are new to the game perfect their technique regardless if they are going to be competing at Regional or YCS or Ultimate Duelist Series (UDS) events.
"What is my win condition?"
Essentially this means "What is your play style?" Do you like putting several attackers on the field and taking the game quick and early? Or do you prefer to put down 1 or 2 monsters and take control of the tempo of the game right out of the gates? Perhaps you prefer to dwindle your opponent's Life Points down without doing a lot, if any, attacking? Once you are able to narrow down how you want to win the game (reducing Life Points to 0 is not a win condition), you can go from there to explore different types of decks in the format to see which deck suits you best.
"Where can I learn to become better at this game?"
Even if card games come naturally to you, you are going to lose sometime. Sometimes, you will lose a lot; perhaps to the same deck/strategy. There are many different ways (some even free!) to learn about decks, play testing decks (especially this), and become a better duelist. To start, there is Dueling Network and YGOPro. Free to join (must have an e-mail for the former) and free to download (for the latter), these resources allow you to build and play with decks within both the TCG and OCG and will allow you to play both single games as well as matches to meet all of your Yu-Gi-Oh! dueling needs.
As you go deeper and depper into the game, your technique and practice will be more fine tuned and you will be able to use your time and resources more and more effectively.
